I'm perplexed how someone can print such amazing pieces in a book that has such poor binding quality. The spine starting coming apart after the first viewing. The content was really good, although I think they could have enlarged several of the paintings to fill up the full spread. Definitely not worth the price tag, but good content nonetheless.
Beautiful pictures from North Africa, they are not the usual photos we are used to see.

"Orientalist" in this context refers to paintings made by Western artists who travelled to North Africa and Egypt in the 19th century. This rich collection was begun thirty years ago and contains almost 150 paintings by 63 artists from 15 different nationalities, such as David Roberts, John Frederick Lewis, Jean Leon Gerome,Hermann Corrodi, Ludwig Deutsch, Frederick Bridgman, Edwin Lord Weeks,Ivan Aivazovsky and Gyula Tornai. Paintings of deserts, markets, ancient ruins, acts of piety, portraits, genre scenes, urban architecture, cultural insights, and landscapes depict a region stretching from Tangier to Damascus, over a period of more than a century.An introductory statement by Shafik Gabr is followed by three essays which describe the Western artistic involvement with North Africa, Egypt and Orientalism. The Collection follows in almost 400 pages. Every painting has a text, most of them by noted experts in the field: Gerald Ackerman, Briony Llewellyn, Lynne Thornton, Emily Weeks and Caroline Williams. The illustrations are lavish. Each painting is represented, often with double pages, or magnified details, or comparative material expanding our appreciation of the scene.In short, these artworks make genuine and lasting contributions to our understanding of the Islamic world. They provide a colorful dialogue between West and East; between creator and subject; between viewer and painting.
